2011 was a milestone year for us. We celebrated our 21st year in business. We saw our growth rate jump at its highest level in our history with the first full year of the Gerharts Engraving acquisition under our belt. We had a banner year for trophy production with Oaklane Quarter Midget Racing Club hosting the Quarter Midget Racing Association nationals race.

This year was not without its challenges however. We worked to improve each and every day and to continue to provide you with the absolute best engraving and recognition services in the area. The breadth of our services expanded, but that was met with the logistical challenge that comes with having a decentralized manufacting set up in two geographic locations.

Thanks to you our customers, and the wonderful employees that enable us to help serve you, here we are looking into 2012 with high hopes! We are eternally grateful for all of you that enable us to be in the position we are in.

The recognition industry is a unique and wonderful business to be in. While the financial returns aren't always optimal, and the great recession affected even us where the previous recessions did not, we are in a business that is forever rewarding to run and be a part of. The stakeholders involved in this business are all high quality amazing individuals who get the importance of recognizing achievements. To see the people who come in to order awards for other individuals who so selflessly give their all everyday to a variety of tasks in their daily lives is simply amazing and inspiring.

We help recognize the achievements of those who save lives, and those who sacrifice their time and energies not for profit but to leave this world a little better place than it was when they got here. To see them put in all their hard work and dedication is really the most rewarding part of this job and it makes waking up and coming to work each and every day a pure joy. Thank you to those of you who have enabled us to help serve you, and we look forward to helping you recognize achievements in the future.

Bux-Mont Awards would not be here with out the many individuals who do so much to change the lives of so many people, and the hard work our employees put in to make sure that the hard work does not go unrecognized. We love what we do, and we look forward to doing it for the next twenty years and beyond!

Employees complete a lengthy project that gets them certified in the sigma methodology. To recognize the achievement, Merck gives each employee who completes the program a nice award to recognize them for their hardwork.

Enjoying the Summer Heat

Well here it is July already and while we have had slow periods the first half of this year sure seemed to fly by quick!
While last year ended with a bang due to the acquisition of another trophy shop, this year to date has marked some historic projects in Bux-Mont Awards short history as well.
We finished up our part in a awe inspiring Marines monument which is being dedicated this month, and we are right in the middle of our biggest trophy job to date, the Oaklane grands. This national quarter midget race is so big that we had to rent a factory to produce the job. Some statistics will follow in a future post.
There are 350 trophies ranging in size from six to four feet.
We are happy to have this opportunity as the people at Oaklane have been extremely good to us as a customer for over ten years now.
If you are in the area at the end of July you should definitely stop by to see a race!

Cast Bronze Marines Monument

We helped a great guy create a monument being dedicated this month in Quantico Virginia to his Marines brethren in " memory of our Golf 2-7 Brothers who made the supreme sacrifice and in honor of all who served Golf Company 2-7 and their country in time of need." It is being dedicated July 23 at the USMC national park.
The monument almost never happened as funding was slow to materialize. But because of the dedication and hardwork of one individual, it was able to come together and it was great to be a part of.

This was such a great story that our local newspaper, The Intelligencer decided to do a writeup on it that can be found on their website, phillyburbs.com

Please look over the photos below. The manufacturer said it was the nicest monument they ever did. Marines employed at the bronze casting company wanted to meet the designer and said it was a job they were certainly proud of, and in our 21 years in business this is our proudest moment as well.

To help a person like Dave Kling bring this together, to help him honor is fallen brethren who fought so hard to keep us free is huge to us. We can't thank all the stakeholders who helped bring this together enough.

Pennridge Wrestling Golf Outing Fundraiser

When all was said and done this was the funnest outing I've been to all year!

The coaches and parents over at the pennridge wreslting club did a great job preparing for this golf outing.

They had some great giveaways planned including a sleeve of balls, a commemorative coffee mug and a pack of tees.

They also had some really cool etched pint glasses that were being given away as prizes for the winning foursome, longest drive and straightest drive.

While we didn't win first, our guys came home with the longest drive and it was a long one!

Thanks again to the wrestling team and we are already eagerly awaiting next year!

There are a bunch of sidewalks being torn up here in Lansdale as the streetscape project Representative Schwartz got to help revitalize the town. Don't let that stop you from stopping by one of the great events or visiting the businesses here in town.

Make Lansdale your next stop on the train to eat, and while you are here visit some of the great businesses in town. There is also a farmers market running every Saturday this summer with many great vendors with fresh meats, eggs, fruits, fresh breads and more!

It will be nice when the streetscape project is done and everyone can begin to enjoy the new sidewalks and improvements being made!

60 years is a long time to do anything

Like the title says, 60 years is a long time to do anything, but one lady made it point to pursue her passion and help teach children to dance for the last 60 years. A woman visited our store in Lansdale recently to inquire as to whether we could provide a etched vase for a gift she was giving for her mother, who was celebrating her 60th year in teaching dance.

Jane Lapoten wanted to recognize her mothers hardwork and grand achievement by giving her something personalized that she would cherish for the rest of her days. While we could not provide her with the base she was seeking, we were able to utilize our sand etching process and made a memory.

Ms. Lapoten was beyond ecstatic when she saw how nice the etching turned out and promised to provide some pictures for us soon, which we will post for you to see. We were very happy that our customer was so happy with the finished product that was provided to her and it was neat seeing her reaction.

This story and countless others continue to inspire me to keep serving the recognition industry and its many wonderful customers. We have heard so many success stories that Bux-Mont Awards was proud to have been a small part of as the provider of the personalized gift or engraved gift or plaque or award.

A customer of ours from our Sellersville store, band Split Horizon will be playing at the First Fridays Lansdale Winter session at the North Penn YMCA. The Festivities will be held March 04 and will begin at 6:00 lasting until 9:00.

Wheelchair Basketball this weekend

We just got back from watching a wheelchair basketball game in the city (my brother plays on the Philly Stars team) and it was a good time as always.

Many visitors of the Please Touch Museum probably know nothing about the little gym next door where all is left on the court in the spirit of competition, and a good time is had by all who play & attend. The game of Wheelchair Basketball is played a lot like normal basketball except the rules are augmented to account for the wheelchairs. You would not believe until you try how hard it is to shoot on a ten foot rim while sitting down, but these guys do a great job and work really hard to better their games.

If you ever get a chance, and hopefully one day you will, you should definitely take in a game or two of a wheelchair basketball tournament as they are some of the funnest games you will watch. As I was filling the coffee maker with water moments ago, I was thinking to myself what it means to strive for excellence. Bux-Mont Awards recognizes achievements. Its one of the main things we do, in addition to brand recognition and engraving signage (another type of recognition) and we take pride in doing it well.

When you look at it though, it's hard to answer the question why do people strive to achieve? What is it inside those type a personalities that tend to work for satisfaction and achieve to be recognized? Some companies are good at recognizing achievements, they usually have a few great managers who know what it means to praise someone for the work they do, even the most menial of tasks. As they say someones gotta do it.

But what happened to those that go above and beyond because they take pride in what they do and they want to be recognized for and associated with a superior work ethic and an overall willingness to press on and achieve.

These people walls are filled with plaques and certificates of achievement, and their numbers in organizations often times are indicative of that businesses success (or lack thereof).

The Phillies Roy Halladay and when he was recognized by the club and gave Carlos Ruiz, his catcher, that custom ring, I couldn't help but think, they understand how valuable that is. They get it.

So I am very much looking for some answers to the question how do you make someone strive to achieve in the comments, so please leave your thoughts. I am thinking its got something to do with the environment they grew up in, but lets start a conversation.

Seven Steps to a successful promotional campaign

Successful promotion campaigns don't happen by chance. To realize goals, promotional products programs must be carefully planned, taking into consideration the audience, budget and, of course, the ultimate result to be gained.

Ready to plan your next promotion? Use the consultant search engine to locate a PPAI member consultant in your area. You and your consultant will discuss these seven important elements to help you plan the best promotion for reaching your objective:

1. Define a specific objective.

Whether the goal is to increase traffic at a tradeshow exhibit or to boost sales with current clients, the first step in any campaign is to clarify the purpose of the program.

2. Determine a workable distribution plan to a targeted audience.

Distribution of a promotional product is as important as the item itself. Research shows that a carefully executed distribution plan significantly increases the effectiveness of promotional products. For example, a pre-show mailing to a select audience delivers more tradeshow traffic and qualified leads than simply distributing items to passersby at the show.

3. Create a central theme.

Linking a recognizable logo and color to all aspects of a campaign, from promotional products to sales sheets to product packaging, helps create an instantly recognizable image.

4. Develop a message to support the theme.

Don't fall prey to the latest trends or fads. The most effective promotional products are used in a cohesive, well-planned campaign.

A good promotional products consultant will help you answer all of these questions as well as offer a variety of value-added services, including unique product ideas, creative distribution solutions and insight on the different imprinting methods just to name a few. While some were consolidating to maintain their bottom lines and stay afloat in the recent tumultuous economic conditions we tried investing. And while we didn't have much money to invest, our bank (with the gracious help of the Small Business Administration), thought enough of our business and our goals to fund an acquisition of a retiring engravers business in Lansdale.

At the same time we are investing in knowledge. We joined a promotional products trade association that enables us to receive discounts on many promotional products which is savings we are passing along to you. They have webinars, online sales tools and much more available to those interested in using promotional products.

There was a bit of a misstep on the web managers (ie me) part, and in transfering the gerharts.com domain over to the account which all our domains are hosted with, the old domain host shut off my access to the nameservers. This caused users attempting to access gerharts.com to reach an error message. We have now fixed the issue and everything is up and running as it should.

Building a Marines Monument

So we had the honor of being the sales people for a Marines Monument being built near Pittsburgh Pennsylvania that is almost complete and will be heading down to its permanent home outside the Marines Museum in Quantico Virginia.

They are still looking for donors for the project so if anyones wants to donate please contact someone at Bux-Mont Awards and we will guide you in the right direction. There is a postor hanging in our Sellersville store with the plans for the monument and I will post some pictures here.

We are working on updating the showroom, and after some paint and slatwall have it looking somewhat respectable.

The sign should be installed this week, so keep an eye out for that. I'm trying to get some pictures up soon.

The trophy and awards scene is changing in Lansdale rather quickly. Services are being expanded, and we are fervently working to get the additional products we offer out on the shelves.

Doing this while helping customers, learning machines, and maintaining a fully functioning store with only one other full time person and a part timer is a challenge, but we take solace in knowing when its done you will be pretty pleased with the results.

Sorry Its Been Awhile

This post is being written from our new location in Lansdale, and while I am writing this I am realizing there has never been a post on the subject.

We are pleased to announce that what was formerly Gerharts Engraving in Lansdale has been acquired by Bux-Mont Awards and Engraving Services of Sellersville. With the previous owner ready to retire, we were approached about a purchase of the business almost two years ago. After a long arduous process, the sale was completed last Wednesday, December 15, and we have been here since.

There are some immediate improvements to the showroom and signage taking place in the coming weeks as well as back end infrastructure improvements that are being put in place in order to make the store in Lansdale more efficient and to better serve you.

This strategic move was made because, as Bux-Mont Awards we felt it was in the best interest to have storefronts in both the Bucks and Montgomery Counties.

We look forward to serving the Lansdale and surrounding counties with quality signage and recognition services and to educate everyone on the benefits of properly recognizing achievements.

Bux-Mont Awards has successfully completed the acquisition of Gerharts engraving in Lansdale. In the coming weeks we will be sprucing up the front with a new sign, investing in updating the processes, and working on things to better serve our Montgomery County customers. The purchase was made not only to be able to offer Bux-Mont Awards existing Montgomery County customers a more convenient location to get their awards, but also to increase our reach in both services offered as well as getting quality recognition products to more of you!

We will be offering the same great service, as the business already had two great employees that we are retaining and upgrading the showroom to include the additional products you have come to expect from Bux-Mont Awards.

There are there are many great charities out there, and a good deal of them trust Bux-Mont Awards to be their recognition services provider. There are two we would like to highlight in this post.

First, we are once again proud to be a part of the annual Pennridge Chamber of Commerce Toy Drive. This Toy Drive benefits the Pennridge FISH food bank organization. They actually set up a toy store for the holidays and allow parents in need to come in and choose toys and gifts so their kids can have a great holiday. It is truly a wonderful thing to be a part of, and Bux-Mont Awards is offering coupons to whomever brings a toy in.

The other isn't a charity as much as a great non profit whose purpose is to honor those Marines who served in Vietnam and also those who gave their lives for our freedom.

We are involved in the production of a Marines Monument that is being erected in Quantico Virginia. They are continuing to raise funds and you can stop by Bux-Mont Awards to support that great cause as well. We will be supporting you at the same time you choose to help someone and every donation made at Bux-Mont Awards will receive a little something from us!

Charities, Non-Profits and their stake in the recognition industry

Charities are some of our best customers. Many of the charities and non-profits understand, for whatever reason, that proper recognition is beneficial to the bottom line. Maybe its the volunteer nature, maybe its because of the many good and worthwhile causes that these charities are supporting. And whatever the reason, they use recognition awards, plaques and gifts to show their appreciation for many things. Volunteering time, donating money, hosting a fundraiser, selling tickets, educating the public, all these things we help recognize and are very proud of it.

Sellersville Winterfest

As the holidays rapidly approach, we just wanted to remind our customers to come visit our town on the first Tuesday in December for the annual Winterfest celebration and tree lighting.

The festivities start at 6:30 and include not only Bux-Mont Awards but also the Sellersville museum and tree lighting across from the fire house. Santa will also be seeing kids at the fire house as well as local businesses staying open late with different offerings.

A personal favorite was the jazz music and the fire at the new Modern Male Barbershop in the odd fellows building pictured above in addition to the free showing of It's a Wonderful Life at the Sellersville Theater.

With a couple new businesses in town it should be a good year!

The biggest trophy we ever made

You have to see this thing to appreciate how big it really is. I will take some pictures with us next to it and post it in a future picture. This enduro racing series wanted a REALLY big trophy for their overall team points winner, and this is what we came up with. It turned out really good - its a bear to handle and you are going to need a small truck to take it home. This is in addition to all the other really big (but not quite that big) trophies they are doing.

Soccer Season continued:

Here is a sneak peak of the trophies being given away at this years SISL'r Slam tournament. We are thankful to the SIS'L organization for their continued commitment to properly recognizing their childrens achievements with trophies and recognition items from Bux-Mont Awards. While we are running out of room in our new digs, we are happy to store them for all 700 of them for a day or two before sending them off into the wild!

Soccer Season

You know soccer season is in full swing when the materials start arriving by the truckload at Bux-Mont Awards. The month of November has brought a good amount of activity, and I like to think our industry is a leading indicator of economic activity!

While we have had to adjust to the unfortunate loss of one of the part time people here, who took a job in her field of study. We are happy to say she found employment at a bakery in Doylestown and seems to be doing quite well. This has led to a shortage of production labor which isn't being felt one bit thanks to the hard work and additional hours put in by Brian, our other part time employee. Brian, Debbie, and Dan along with the owner Greg Bencsik comprise the entire Bux-Mont Awards team. We work together to ensure that the area has access to a number of quality recognition products in one location.

That said we are also getting ready for the holidays, with a recent shipment of glassware coming in that we will be highlighting in future holiday posts. Stay tuned!

These are the people that deserve to be rewarded, and so often it is the other way around. These people, these hardworking people filled with a spirit that few of us can imagine, are rewarding the few that are moved enough to make a monetary contribution. It is inspirational indeed to see these people work. To meet them when they come in wanting to recognize a big donor, or a big fundraiser when in fact without the efforts of these very people that recognition wouldn't be possible.

It is inspirational to see people willing to recognize the work put in by others even though it's a fraction of the work they put in themselves without thinking of taking anything, even a simple thank you. Custom Quilt Squares for the crafty of the bunch

Finished product of a quilt that we helped make! The Messiah College Logo was made using the same process we use for our t-shirt production.

This woman has been doing these quilts for her grandchildren for years now, and each time has used our services to get the custom quilt squares done.

Surprisingly to us, there is quite a market for these custom quilt squares and they really addto the finished product. Some people have tried the transfers you buy at Walmart, but they wear out. These direct - to - garment imprints will last for as long as you need, and we have done photographs on these quilt squares to make a one of a kind instant heirloom!

SWDTYMNKA is now The Recognition Product Spotlight

I am glad to report we have settled on a new name. The name of this hopefully weekly or at the very least biweekly blog feature will be The Recognition Product Spotlight. If you think you have a catchier name, we are always looking to improve so leave them in the comments.

This week we are continuing down the personalized gift engraving road and showing you some samples of our wine boxes. These beautiful rosewood piano finish wine sets come comlete with four wine tools and a personalized engraved plate on the front.

I gave my wife one of these for our first anniversary and am very pleased at the reception. She loved the wine as well as the presentation and it was immediately followed by plans for dinner at our favorite BYOB Mexican restaurant in Quakertown.

Today I attended a focus groom to aid the Upper Perkiomen Valley Chamber of Commerce in their strategic planning endeavors. I felt it was very productive and we got to make a cool advertisement for how we see the chamber in 2013!

Bux-Mont Awards has a blog for a number of reasons... like to educate our customers on the many solutions offered to your recognition needs. (as seen in the hopefully somewhat regular, hopefully soon to be renamed Stuff we do that you may not know about or SWDTYMNKA posts) We are taking ideas for a new name for that column.

Another reason we have this blog is to assist us in our mission of recognition. We are a recognition company whose goals aim to further the spread of quality recognition with their stakeholders. While this aim is why we offer a lot of engraved and digitally imprinted awards and trophies, we also realize that they aren't always the appropriate way to say "job well done." Sometimes all anyone is looking for is a pat on the back. Some times we aren't recognizing an achievement rather we are helping a company optimize their brand recognition through the use of promotional products or apparel.

Sometimes we are helping youth sports teams with their fundraising or helping young children gain positive well being from playing sports with participation awards, and other times we are making awards for big tournaments or events. Offering a variety of things with the aim of spreading recognition so that you benefit as much as possible from our hard work.

As an extension of our customers, we help them achieve their goals and believe that everyone can benefit from recognizing achievement and utilizing recognition products. The ones who get it and understand what recognition means to them also get how it impacts their bottom line, how it reduces turnover and builds self esteem.

Building Satisfaction

There is an indisputable chain between satisfied, motivated employees, and satisfied customers. If you will focus on satisfaction of employees, it will motivate them and these motivated employees will satisfy your customers.

Through Recognition

Many people are hungry for genuine recognition than monetary benefit. Some people are motivated to grab an opportunity to get their name on the wall, receive a trophy, or get a certificate of appreciation by the company. It satisfies them with an "emotional recognition" for their deeds.

In an effort to keep you posted on how we try to help the environment, we at Bux-Mont Awards want to keep you updated on how we try to help leave our world a better place for the children.

In addition to reusing, we also look to reduce and recycle. We purchase our materials in full sheets and cut them down as we need. We don't just throw our scraps away. We reuse the pieces when we can and recycle what we can't use.

We know it's not much but we try to reduce our carbon footprint and realize that while just us doing it may not make much difference, but if everyone in our industry did it, we know that this is something that can last.

We want to be the change we want to see in this world. And Bux-Mont Awards wants you to help.

With green having been all but forgotten in this economic downturn, lets hope that it isn't all forgotten on the upswing. We can continue to drive this economy by espousing the green virtues and help leave this planet a better place for our children (sound familiar all you aging boomers?)

In our effort to go green we will highlight here on our blog, some of the things we are doing to leave this planet a better place for our kids.

One of these things is our love of Velcro. We are a big fan of Velcro for many reasons. Not only do they save us from the arduous tasks of shoe tying, but the folks over at Velcro have been busy coming up with new applications for their hook and loop.

One of these ingenious ideas is as a reusable zip tie. Velcro zip ties are great. We never had enough zip ties around when you need them, and I always hated having to waste one every time someone asked for a new monitor or to move their keyboard. The velcro zip ties were the perfect solution.

We are happy to do away with throw away zip ties and switch to the velcro brand. When we were going through our big move, we needed a solution for our cable organization that was as green as could be and worked for our organizational needs. Velcro answered the call for our needs in grand fashion!

Our goal for this blog is to help you with your recognition needs. So for all of you in the corporate and business world. What does recognition mean to you?

Lets hear some ideas in the comments. What are ways you recognize achievements? What does employee recognition mean to you?

Most business do employee of the month plaques to the point where it dilutes the meaning of the achievement. Without clearly articulating what the employee of the month means it has no meaning. Just putting a picture and a name on a plaque is worthless unless you give it some worth.

Managers need to realize that the hard work is worth more than just a name on the plaque (I am not saying that plaque shouldn’t be there), and celebrate that achievement pointing out to fellow employees, and even customers, the hardwork and diligence that went into earning that recognition.

People work hard and take pride in the work they do. If you recognize their achievement for what it is, they will work harder for you. Make them buy into your companies vision, and they will go to war with you.

They put in a lot of hardwork and dedication to serving the people of the communities many of them work and live in and they do a great job at assisting many people in their daily lives. This is Bux-Mont Awards’ 20th year in business and we are currently brainstorming different ways to recognize all the great support we have gotten from our current customers. This summer marked my daughters first art camp, and she came away with some really neat stuff. She made the coolest picture and forgot it there, luckily the art studio where she was going was right above our old store. The teacher brought the painting down and I couldn’t have been more proud. My wife and I showed the picture to everybody and her grandmom and great grandmom absolutely loved it. Dad was looking for ideas for birthday presents for my daughter this year and decided to put her painting onto one of our imprintable tote bags.

What a great idea, the final imprint turned out great and anna loved it! Her mom-mom got one for Christmas and she was absolutely ecstatic as well.

A lot of people think that we are only trophies, but the trophy shops today are not your grandparents or event your mom and dads trophy shops. Gone are the days of trophy shops doing only trophies. Today's awards stores are more of a recognition solutions providers.

Golf Tournament Planning continued

Now that you know who's running the show, it's time to do some dirty work. A budget is going to need to be developed and followed. A fine crafted budget takes a lot of stress out of the planning process and provides a roadmap to achievable objectives.

The budget process is where you decide on entry fees, sponsorship fees, and where you will play. The location of the event, catering, and selection of awards and prizes all affect the budget. Also, you will want to take into account the amount you want to donate, rather than whatevers left at the end. Having a fundraising goal can help bring sponsors on board and create a buzz in print and online media.

Another question that may get raised comes when you are trying to figure out the number of participants. On one hand you don't want to say no to someone who wants to play but you also don't want to be on the golf course for 6 or 7 hours.

Printed materials cost money as well. Try to get a printer to subsidize part of the cost in exchange for putting his name on them and being listed as the print sponsor, recognition at these events is at a premium because there is a guaranteed number of people looking at the sponsors business.

Once the budget is crafted you want to lay out an outline for each chairman to help them stay on task.

Golf Tournament Planning Step One

The first thing you need to decide before you even begin is the roles and responsibilities. Who will be responsible for what? You are going to want to create a committee to keep focus on the tournaments goals and will bring the golf outing together.

Typical Roles Needed Include:

Tournament Chairman- the person with the vision. Expected to lead and provide guidance to the golf tournament.
Honorary Chairman- Someone well known in the community to help draw golfers.
Vice Chairman, Sponsors- someone who can focus on getting sponsors for the event.
Vice Chairman, Event planning-
Vice Chairman, Awards and Prizes- this person will be in charge of getting awards and giveaways to not only the golfers but to the sponsors as well.

The committee chairman and the committee people will come from a variety of places, make sure they understand the objective and their place in the big picture. These people will be volunteering and should be recognized as such. Time is worth it's weight in gold and these people are as much as sponsor as the monetary donors, make sure they are recognized for it.

We can engrave stuff that wasn't purchased here (most of the time.) A lot of people are surprised to learn that we engrave stuff. Like our name isn't Bux-Mont Awards & Engraving Services or we are just a trophy shop.

Thankfully we have a network of jewelers referring customers to us. Long time ago, the jewelers used to do their own engraving, but then it got to be too expensive and since we opened most have been referring peoples engraving needs to us.

Most local trophy shops have the ability to do this. We offer a lot of the same products as a typical mall engraving store, but we do it at a more affordable cost with higher quality. The quality is higher because we take care of our machines and take our time. The more affordable cost comes from not having to pay high mall rents.

Local Sports News Coverage

Is it just me or is more attention being paid to local sports coverage in the papers. I heard on the news the other day that ESPN is going to start focusing on increasing it's local coverage with new channels to compete with comcast sportsnet among others.

I wonder if local high school sports is where the newspapers are going to find their new niche to call home while figuring out how to make money on the web. There are two good sites covering local news in this area: phillyburbs Bucks Mont sports now site and Rally: The Daily News & Inquirers online offerings. Both are good, but neither of them have won awards made by Bux-Mont Awards so how good could they be right? But they have some great writers and coverage of the local sports today.

Recognition programs for companies big and small

My wife and I were talking the other day about an employee that recently gave her two weeks, and I was saying how they needed an employee recognition program to help them retain their employees. She responded that being in a small dental office, they would just keep giving the same person an employee of the month plaque over and over.

That got me thinking a lot about small business and what they do to recognize achievements and how it is a very underdeveloped part of our business. Some small businesses get it, but a lot don't realize that there is more to recognition incentive programs than employee of the month plaques.

Even if you were to recognize someone monthly, you can easily create a plaque or recognition piece that sits in a prominent location in the office highlighting the persons achievements.

Contests could be held between employees that would reward them for exemplary service or commitment to employee loyalty and this could be in the form of gift cards to their favorite retailer or even a lunch out with the boss.

Monetary bonuses are nice and greatly appreciated by employees when they receive them, but they are quickly forgotten. These bonuses coupled with an effective recognition program set up by your favorite recognition specialist will ensure your employees are in your court come game time.

About.com's article on employee recognition is a good one. This is the one area where Bux-Mont Awards sales has fallen off. With the financial meltdown came fear. A fear that halted the stock market and a fear that skittered through the banks so fast it brought lending to a halt. This fear cost many people their jobs, and it cost many people their businesses and livelihoods.

While answers are waiting to be found a fear persists. People know that changes need to be made, and many are doing just that. Paying down credit cards, saving more, searching for greater and greater deals, peoples habits are changing.

But that doesn't change the fact that people need to be recognized. When business go through massive layoffs, or even small layoffs it fuels this fear I was just telling you about. This is a reason, in downturns in the economy, why you need to utilize recognition to show your employees appreciation.

Because it works.

Lets face it, businesses don't have the budgets anymore to give big bonuses, and in many cases they aren't giving bonsuses at all. Some have cut out their budgets for awards programs and others haven't been meeting their goals which doesn't warrant their traditional sales awards programs.

My advice to them: Do something different! Find a reason to recognize achievement. When done right (ask the professionals) it can have profound effects on your organization. People need meaning in their lives, and commitment to recognizing their achievements and giving them the meaning they seek in their jobs will get you an employee for life. These associations and bonds being formed will stay with the company and increase brand equity and bring greater increases in worth to the company.

It really works, and our being around for 20 years is a testament to that. We see the results first hand in the form of repeat customers and community feedback. It really is a neat thing to be a part of.
